Orchids for Growing Indoors

Given that orchids are one of the most diverse species of flowering plants (more than 30,000 species and hundreds of thousands of hybrids), the selection process is often the hardest part of growing orchids indoors. It is recommended to limit your choices to the following five when selecting orchid plants for growing at home:

Dendrobium - colorful, very popular orchid species in the world. Many gorgeous hybrids of this orchid plant have been created due to great demand;

Phalaenopsis - a simple beauty. Colors include classic white, purple and pink. Offers a very long lasting bloom of two months or more;

Cattleya - florists most favorite orchid. Blooms in small groups of one to eight flowers per season. Colors range from white to deep purple;

Cymbidium - hardy blooms that are also great for bouquets. Colors include: white, burgundy, green, yellow and pink;

Oncidium - also known as dancing ladies. Several flowers on each stem. Blooms last 6 weeks and more.

Narrowing down your options to these five species will enable you to find an orchid flower that will be perfect for growing indoors. Your next step would be selecting an orchid plant based on suitable environment, lighting, watering and temperature requirements.
