About Orchids

Orchids are magnificent flowers, and when orchids bloom they present a breathtaking dance of color and fragrance ...

Against the popular beleif of rarity, the orchid plants is one of the largest flowering plant families. There are more than 30,000 orchid species and hundreds of thousands of hybrids cultivated by scientists and hobbyists. The orchid grows anywhere in the world, except deserts and super cold areas. However, the tropics is where you'll find majority of orchid species.

Your orchid's origin dictates the way you need to care for it. If it flourishes being anchored on a tree, it’s a perennial epiphyte. Those who can grow on rock surfaces and don’t need much care are much likely to be hardy lithophytes. If you can grow your orchid in loose soil, it’s a terrestrial plant. Another kind which lacks chlorophyll and depends on decaying plant matter is myco-heterotrophs.

Considering the variety of colors, sizes and shapes, it is almost certain that you'll find the one that will grow and blossom quite nicely in your home. Try growing orchid once, and you will be destined to become hooked to this challenging, yet very rewarding hobby.
